We’d like to believe the words of our forefathers; that we are all created equal and should be treated as such. Not everybody follows that creed, and many times people are imprisoned wrongfully or are discriminated against due to the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, or their religious beliefs. Civil rights are basically a set of laws that say that you deserve the right to be treated as anyone else would be treated. This means that, should you be arrested, you should be treated exactly the same as anyone else who gets arrested. The incident was caught on tape, and the men with the Los Angeles Police Department were taken to court and found guilty. Mr. King was later awarded $3.8 million dollars in a civil case.

Before you can file a lawsuit based on someone denying your civil rights, it is first a good idea to make sure that, in the eyes of the law, your civil rights were denied. This can be made possible simply by speaking with a lawyer. A lawyer who is experienced in civil rights will be able to tell you if you have a valid case or not.

If you do, be prepared for a long haul. Civil rights cases have been known to last for months and even a year or longer, which is not an easy thing for someone who is trying to pay their bills and who is unable to due to being let go unfairly at work. Even if you still have your job and are dealing with a civil rights case, you may find that you need money in order to be able to pay for the experts that you need to have in your case, which is something that your lawyer may not cover.
